About STARS
STARS was created in response to the need for services targeted at girls and young women ages 12-18 who lack the knowledge of inner beauty and self worth. STARS was developed and brought to life with the passion and drive taken from what was once a dream and made into reality. STARS is committed to help free our youth from the barriers of self acceptance as portrayed by culture, media, negative relationships and low self-esteem. FACTS: Real Girls, Real Pressure: A National Report on the State of Self Esteem - 6/08 Philadelphia is ranked among the top ten locations with the highest percentage of teens engaging in negative behaviors (disordered eating, injuring themselves, fighting, bullying, smoking, drinking) when feeling badly about themselves. • In the survey conducted, 68% of 1,029 teen girls age 13-17 in Philadelphia believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way (their looks, performance in school, relationships with friends and/or family).
